Picts at Benvie

Originally in Benvie churchyard and now on display inthe McManus Museum and Art Gallery, Dundee.

On one face are two horsemen, the upper horseman is accompanied by a small dog.

The upper horseman has a long drooping moustache and long curled hair. The lower figure appears to be wearing a helmet

This Pictish carved stone is decorated on both faces and along the narrow edges.

On the other face is a decorated cross, with angels in the top quarters and intertwined beasts in the lower quarters

The sides have interlaced decoration.

The museum information plate says that the carving showing influences from Ireland, Northumbria and Near East.

Interestingly, there are none of the Pictish symbols.
