The Death of Indulf King of the Scots : part 3
The Battle of Bauds or Baads is popularly associated with the death of Indulf, however the Ordnance Survey card on trove.scot dismisses it as 'mythical". The entry for Cullen in the New Statistical Account of Scotland, by Rev. Henderson seems to be the first record of the battle site.
The presence of tumuli in this area evidently lead to the assumption that these were associated with the battle leading to the death of Indulf. Archaeological investigation of these tumuli showed that the they were in fact much earlier than medieval, as recorded by W Crammond in the Proceedings of the Antiquaries of Scotland Society 12th April 1897.
The village of Cullen in Moray has been identified as Inver-cullen.
Cullen does have a good claim for being the site as it has a Cullen Burn, but there is another Cullen to the east. This Cullen also has a Cullen Burn. Interestingly Rev. Thomas Wilson, in The Aberdeen Magazine (1832) says that this where the reinforcements for the Danes at The Battle of Bleeding Pits, came from.
