Picts at Tyrie

Tyrie doesn't lie in the old county of Banffshire, being over 10 miles outside the eastern edge of the county, in the neighbouring county of Buchan.

Inside the parish church is the remains of a stone with Pictish carvings. The stone is known as "The Raven Stone", with a depiction of an eagle above a notched rectangle and z-rod symbol. More recently the design has been marked out in black.

There is no information at the church about the stone, and the church is now closed, pending sale by the Church of Scotland.

Aberdeenshire Council have been unsuccessful in their attempts to acquire the stone, and at present it appears that the stone will be sold along with the church.

John Stuart in his book, Sculptured stones of Scotland, published in 1856, notes that the stone was found built into the north east foundations of the old church.
