Picts at Fyvie

Fyvie once lay in the Pictish kingdom of Cé

Fyvie doesn't lie in the old county of Banffshire, being in Buchan, under 10 miles outside the eastern edge of the county,

The parish church has built into the eastern wall fragments of stones carved in the Pictish style

One stone has a crescent shape with z-rod, a 'mirror' symbol , and what is often described as a Pictish beast

or a kelpie. The information board at the church and the OS record card describe it as an elephant.

This stone found in the on the front wall of Fyvie schoolhouse

Another stone is a fragment from a stone cross, with

interlaced pattern, which was found near the church,

as was the third which has symbols of an eagle and

part of a double disc.

The last, which is from Rossiebrisbane has a horseshoe symbol over a disc with 3 circles in it.

This was found by Jas. Hay Chalmers being used as a drain cover on the B992 south from

Kirkton of Auchterless. He was also said to have removed a sculptured stone from the centre

of a stone circle at Tocherford, it may be the same or another stone (now missing).

Most of the stones were found close by and one in the nearby settlement of Rossiebrisbane
