Picts at Abernethy, Perthshire

The village of Abernethy in historic Perthshire was the site of a number of Pictish carved stones.

Unfortunately, whilst the main symbols are fine examples of more common types, a tuning fork (or broken sword) over a crescent and v-rod, the stone also includes 2 rare symbols. The anvil and hammer, I believe only occur on one other stone.

One stands next to the 1000 year round tower, near the village graveyard.

Found in the mid 19th century and dating from 5th or 6th century.

The stone was at some time, trimmed and mounted in a base, which means much of it is lost and part of one symbol hidden

The tall round tower (there are only 2 in Scotland), is not Pictish, but linked to a religious sect, the Culdees which began in Ireland.the tower dates from the later 11th century
